What We Do
The Library Settlement Partnership (LSP) program offers innovative services, information and referral to Newcomers to the Peel Region. LSP workers organize a variety of information sessions based on the needs of the newcomer community.
Workshops and Events
English Conversation Circles sessions are most popular amongst newcomers and are held weekly at all five libraries with the help of TESL certified teacher and other volunteers. Participants practice English speaking and listening skills; by using everyday examples and fun activities, teachers works with the participants in enhancing vocabulary and language.
Newcomer Circles are held twice a month and aims to provide information to newcomers about settlement and how to prepare for life in Canada. These sessions are designed to educate newcomers to better understand the Peel Region Community and resources that are available to them to access. The goal is in providing newcomer men and women an avenue to spend time and share creative ideas with other newcomers in a diverse environment setting.
Senior sessions are held twice a month and guest speakers who are experts are inviting to facilitate information on trending topics to seniors. These sessions are designed for seniors to come and share their thoughts on various topics including positive parenting, anger management, mental health, diet and nutrition, diabetes and prevention, stress/time management amongst various other topics of discussion. Our LSP staff are constantly exploring innovative ways to engage newcomer seniors by educating them and facilitate their integration and contribution to Canadian society.
Pathways to Settlement workshops in collaboration with the Centre for Education and Training are held monthly in libraries on settlement related topics that address current trends in the community as well as Canadian Citizenship Preparation information, financial literacy, job search resources and various other information. Resources and tools are also provided to participants to ensure their integration in settlement is a smooth transition.
